En langage mathématique, la vitesse s'écrit dB/dt. Nous avons donc : -dB/dt= k.B, ce qui signifie que la diminution de la quantité de médicament dans le sang (- dB) en fonction du temps (dt) est proportionnelle à la constante de vitesse (k) et à la quantité de médicament présente dans le sang (B) à l'instant envisagé. Il s'agit ici d'une cinétique dite du premier ordre.
